Accountability in Higher Education: Navigating Current Issues and Trends

I wanted to share this book, published by one of our faculty members at Arkansas State University, Ed Leadership Department, Dr. Topeks Small Singleton. I was invited to write one of the chapters in this new book. The chapter 7 title is Funding Trends in Higher Education that Have a Significant Impact on Accountability

For many years, higher education has come under fire for it lack of accountability. During this period, there has been increasing scrutiny over how universities allocate and spend their budgets. While state and federal funding sources have dwindled, the cost of operating a university has continued to rise. Politicians have publicly pressured universities to avoid raising tuition, yet this has led to public outcry over the return on investment of obtaining a higher education degree. Many parents have also expressed outrage over the rising cost and lack of accessibility. The reduction in financial resources has left many universities with limited options, often forcing them to raise tuition to cover costs. As a result, budget cuts loom across the country, and numerous universities have closed their doors in the past decade. In the United States, responsibility for the cost of public higher education is distributed among three main entities: students themselves, the parents of students, and the government at the federal, state, and local levels (Quadlin & Powell, 2022)
